A Technical Introduction to TCP/IP Internals

The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite is the networking protocol stack of choice for interconnecting dissimilar computer and operating systems. In the world of engineering and scientific workstations, TCP/IP is the standard, pushing many installations utilizing proprietary networking protocols to integrate their systems into a TCP/IP network. Additionally, as UNIX finds it way more and more into the commercial and business communities, TCP/IP is finding an even wider audience.

This class presents a general, technical overview of the TCP/IP protocol family including the networking model and protocol layering. Ip addressing, routing, and symbolic name to address resolution are described along with the standard TCP/IP applications and services.

You will learn:

  • Characteristics of the TCP/IP protocol suite
  • TCP/IP network configuration parameters
  • How IP routing works
  • Use of IP subnets
  • Learn basic TCP/IP network troubleshooting techniques

Topics to be covered include:

  • TCP/IP protocol overview
  • Internet model
  • Protocol layering
  • Data link layer protocols
  • Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
  • User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
  • Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
  • Addressing
  • Routing
  • Symbolic name-to-address translation
    • Host Tables
